Item Insurance
The Item Insurance system allows you to protect your most valuable equipment from being lost when you die.
Rather than risking your favourite armour, weapons or tools forever, you can insure eligible items using the /insurance command. If you die while carrying insured items, they will remain safely in your inventory instead of being dropped.
Insurance is designed to give you peace of mind while still encouraging thoughtful decisions about what is worth protecting.
Opening the Insurance Menu
Use:
/insurance
This opens the Insurance menu, where you can:
- View your currently insured items
- Insure eligible items
- Cancel existing insurance policies
- View insurance costs and information
How It Works
- Obtain an eligible item.
- Open
/insurance. - Select the item you wish to insure.
- Pay the insurance premium.
Once insured, that item remains protected against death only.
If you later die while carrying the item:
- ✅ The insured item stays in your inventory.
- ✅ It remains insured after death.
- ✅ Your insurance policy continues automatically.
What Can Be Insured?
Insurance is intentionally limited to valuable equipment rather than every item in the game.
Examples include:
- Swords
- Pickaxes
- Axes
- Shovels
- Hoes
- Helmets
- Chestplates
- Leggings
- Boots
- Elytra
- Shields
- Tridents
- Crossbows
- Bows
- Fishing Rods
- Flint & Steel
- Shears
- Carrot on a Stick
- Warped Fungus on a Stick
In general, non-stackable vanilla equipment can be insured.
What Cannot Be Insured?
Some examples of items that are not eligible:
- Blocks
- Food
- Potions
- Arrows
- Totems of Undying
- Shulker Boxes
- Bundles
- Containers of any kind
What Insurance Covers
Insurance protects items only when they would normally be lost because of your own death.
Covered:
- ✅ Dying in the Overworld
- ✅ Dying in the Nether
- ✅ Dying in the End
- ✅ Falling into lava
- ✅ Falling into the void
- ✅ Dying to mobs
- ✅ Dying to another player
Not covered:
- ❌ Throwing an item away
- ❌ Destroying an item
- ❌ Losing items from containers
- ❌ Items deleted by commands or administrators
- ❌ Any situation that is not caused directly by your death
Portable Storage
This is one of the most important rules to understand.
Insurance only protects the insured item itself while it is being carried by you.
If you place an insured item inside a Shulker Box, bundle, or other portable storage and then lose that when you die:
- ❌ The item is not protected.
- ❌ The insurance policy does not apply.
- ❌ The item will be lost.
This was a deliberate design decision because of the increased complexity involved in reliably protecting items inside portable containers.
For maximum protection, keep insured equipment in your inventory rather than inside portable storage.
Ownership Rules
Insurance belongs to you, not whoever happens to be holding the item.
To prevent exploits, insurance is automatically cancelled if ownership changes.
Examples include:
- Giving the item to another player
- Another player picking the item up
- Selling or trading the item
If ownership changes, the item will no longer be insured.
Enchanting & Upgrading Items
Insurance stays with your item as it changes over time.
If you enchant or upgrade an insured item, your insurance policy will automatically adjust to reflect its new value.
For example:
- Adding enchantments may increase the insurance premium.
- Removing enchantments may reduce the premium.
- Upgrading equipment (such as Netherite gear) will update the policy automatically.
You don’t need to cancel or purchase a new policy after modifying an insured item.
If your premium changes, the Insurance menu will always display the current cost for that item.
Tips
- Insure the equipment you would hate to lose.
- Expensive enchanted gear is usually worth protecting.
- Don’t waste money insuring items that are easy to replace.
- Remember that Shulker Boxes are not covered.
- If you’re planning a dangerous expedition, make sure your important gear is insured before you leave.
