Graves

Dying doesn’t mean losing everything you’ve worked for. When you die on Thumpstone, your dropped inventory is normally stored safely in a grave, giving you time to return and recover it.

How graves work

When you die, a grave is created containing the items you would normally have dropped and remains available for 24 hours.

You can have up to 5 active graves at a time.

Graves can be created in the:

  • Overworld
  • Nether
  • End

The lobby is excluded.

Graves during war

If you are a member of a Nation actively at war, your grave will only remain available for 10 minutes.

Recovering your items

Return to your grave and break it to recover its contents.

Your items are transferred directly back into your inventory when the grave is broken, so you don’t need to pick everything up from the ground.

If you have more items than will fit in your inventory, take particular care when recovering your grave and make sure you have enough space available. Be aware that any items that do not fit in your inventory will be dropped, which you might not be able to pick up if you are inside someone else’s land claim.

Graves inside claimed land

Your items remain recoverable even if you die inside somebody else’s Land.

You do not need to be a member of the Land, Nation or an allied Land. Your Lands role does not affect your ability to recover your own grave.

This means that if you die while visiting, exploring or fighting somewhere you don’t have normal building permissions, you should still be able to:

  • have your grave created inside the claim;
  • return to the grave;
  • break your own grave; and
  • recover your items.

This exception applies only to your grave. It does not give you permission to break blocks, open containers or otherwise bypass the protections of the Land around it.

Grave protection

Graves are protected from other players.

Only the grave owner can normally access its contents. Other players cannot simply break or loot your grave and take your items.

The area immediately surrounding a grave is also temporarily protected against interference. Players cannot break or place blocks within the protected radius, and explosions are prevented from damaging the area.

This protection exists to make sure another player cannot simply destroy, bury or immediately obstruct your grave before you can recover it.

Safe grave locations

The graves system attempts to find a safe location for your grave rather than blindly placing it wherever you died.

For example, it can relocate graves when the original location would leave the grave:

  • in the void;
  • inside a solid block;
  • in powder snow;
  • in an unsuitable position in water or lava; or
  • otherwise somewhere that cannot safely support the grave.

Because of this, your grave may occasionally appear somewhere close to your death location rather than on the exact block where you died.

Graves are also permitted on the Nether roof.

Finding your grave

After dying, you receive a grave compass to help you find your way back. It’s important to note that each time you die you will only receive a compass pointing to your most recent grave. If you need to find locations of all your graves, use the /graves command.

Experience

Your grave also preserves 70% of the experience associated with your death.

Recovering your grave allows you to recover the stored experience along with your items.

Grave limits and expiry

Each player can have a maximum of 5 active graves. A grave lasts for 24 hours. If you die more than 5 times, your oldest grave will be destroyed and your items will be dropped, free for anyone to collect.
