Lands

Lands are at the heart of the server. They allow you to protect your builds, form settlements with other players, manage shared territory and eventually join forces with other settlements to create a Nation.

You don’t have to build a huge town. A Land can be anything from a secluded personal base to a large community settlement.

Every player can create one Land in the Overworld. As you progress through Guild Ranks, you will be able to unlock the ability to also create one in the Nether and one in The End.

Creating a Settlement

Create a Land using:

/lands create <name>

Creating your first Land is free and automatically claims the chunk you’re standing in.

Open the main management menu at any time with:

/lands

Claiming Territory

Minecraft worlds are divided into 16×16 block chunks. Lands protects complete chunks.

Claim the chunk you’re standing in with:

/lands claim

Or use:

/lands selection

to select and claim a larger area.

Your first claim is free. Further claims start at £150 per chunk, with the price increasing by £25 for each additional claim, up to a maximum claim price of £2,500 per chunk.

Your settlement starts with a base capacity of 25 chunks, but this grows dramatically as your settlement develops.

You also gain additional potential claim capacity from recruiting members.

Outposts

Your settlement doesn’t have to be one continuous area.

A single Land can contain up to three separate parts. In practice, this means you can have your main settlement plus up to two remote outposts.

These outposts can be a long way from your original settlement.

This is particularly useful as the world expands. You don’t need to avoid settling early because you’re worried about being stuck in the original world border. When new territory is unlocked later in the season, your existing settlement can establish an outpost there without abandoning its original home.

All parts remain part of the same settlement. They share the same members, bank, level and management.

Your Settlement Spawn

Every Land has one settlement spawn, even if it has multiple outposts.

Your spawn is created automatically when the Land is founded and can be moved later.

Use:

/lands spawn

to return to it.

Outposts do not receive their own independent Lands spawn.

Neighbouring Settlements

Claims belonging to different settlements cannot normally be placed directly against one another.

There is a buffer between neighbouring Lands, helping prevent players from surrounding or crowding another settlement.

Settlements belonging to Nations receive a slightly larger buffer against applicable neighbouring claims.

Inviting Players

Invite another player into your settlement with:

/lands trust <player>

Members become trusted across the Land unless you specifically assign them to an individual area.

Your settlement has a generous base member capacity of 50 players, with additional capacity unlocked through settlement progression.

Players can belong to several Lands, although each player can own only one.

Roles & Permissions

Not everyone needs the same level of control.

Thumpstone provides several settlement roles:

Owner

The settlement founder and ultimate administrator.

Steward

A senior deputy with broad administrative powers. Stewards can help manage members, claims, areas, the settlement spawn and many other settlement settings.

Only give this role to somebody you trust.

Officer

A security and military role. Officers can help manage access and wars without receiving the much broader administrative powers of a Steward.

Member

The normal role for settlement residents.

There are also special roles for Nation members, Allies, Visitors and Tenants.

Land owners can customise many permissions through the Lands menu.

Communication

You can chat in-game to members of your land using the /lands chat command or simply @land.

Additionally, you can set up private Discord text and voice channels to communicate with only members of your land:

  • Link your account using /discordbridge account link
  • In the Discord #bot-commands channel, use the command /lands channel create [land] to create the private voice and text channels.
  • The channels are only visible to members of your Land.

Areas

A Land can be divided internally into Areas.

Unlike normal claims, Areas can be defined down to individual blocks and can be three-dimensional.

This makes them useful for things such as:

  • private houses
  • shops
  • farms
  • storage rooms
  • workshops
  • public spaces
  • restricted areas

You can give players different permissions in individual Areas without giving them the same access everywhere else.

Your settlement can create up to 25 Areas.

Manage them through the Lands menu or create selections using:

/lands selection

The Land Bank

Every settlement has its own bank.

View it with:

/lands balance

Deposit money with:

/lands deposit <amount>

The bank is important. Claiming costs, upkeep and other Land expenses can be taken from it.

If the bank doesn’t contain enough for an action, Lands may fall back to the responsible player’s personal balance where appropriate.

Upkeep

Territory isn’t free to maintain.

A standalone settlement pays £30 per claimed chunk every week.

If your Land cannot afford its upkeep, Lands can begin automatically unclaiming your most recently claimed chunks until the remaining upkeep can be paid.

Don’t claim more territory than your settlement can afford to maintain.

Higher settlement levels reduce your upkeep costs.

Once your settlement joins a Nation, its economy changes. It stops paying normal Land upkeep directly to the server and instead becomes part of the Nation economy. See the Nations guide for details.

Settlement Progression

Settlements develop through seven levels.

Levels Can Be Lost

Settlement levels aren’t permanent.

If your settlement later falls below the requirements for its current level, for example because members leave or its bank balance falls, it can be downgraded.

Growing is one challenge. Staying successful is another.

Nations

A successful settlement doesn’t have to remain independent.

Lands can join together to create Nations, sharing progression, diplomacy and war.

Your settlement remains a distinct Land after joining a Nation, it doesn’t simply merge its territory with everybody else’s.

See the Nations Guide for the next stage of progression.
