Nations

Settlements are only the beginning.

A Nation is an alliance of independent Lands working together as a larger political, economic and military power.

Nations are one of the main long-term progression systems in Season 2 and ultimately determine some of the largest and most powerful communities on the server.

What is a Nation?

A Nation is a collection of player settlements.

One Land forms the Nation and becomes its capital. Other Lands can then be invited to join.

Importantly, joining a Nation does not destroy or merge your settlement.

Each member Land keeps its own:

  • territory
  • owner
  • members
  • roles
  • Areas
  • Land bank
  • settlement identity

The Nation sits above those Lands and links them together.

Creating a Nation

The owner of a Land can create a Nation with:

/nations create <name>

Creating a Nation costs £75,000.

The founding Land becomes its capital.

Nation names must be between 5 and 20 characters. Renaming an established Nation costs £25,000 and has a 14-day cooldown, so choose carefully.

Inviting Settlements

Invite another Land using:

/nations trust <land>

The invited settlement can then accept the invitation.

There is no maximum geographic distance between the capital and a settlement being invited, so Nations can span widely separated parts of the world.

Nation Size

A new Nation can contain a maximum of 3 Lands, with further capacity unlocked through Nation progression.

This makes expansion something Nations have to earn rather than simply recruiting every settlement immediately.

The Capital

Every Nation has a capital Land.

The Nation is initially centred on the Land that created it, although the capital can later be changed with:

/nations setcapital

The capital is particularly important because:

/nations spawn

teleports players to the capital Land’s spawn.

Nation Members & Permissions

Players belonging to Lands in the same Nation aren’t automatically given unrestricted access to every settlement.

Each Land has a special Nation role controlling what fellow Nation members are allowed to do there.

This lets settlements cooperate without giving up control of their own territory.

Land owners should check their Nation-role permissions and decide how much access they want fellow citizens to have.

Communication

You can chat in-game to members of your Nation using the /nations chat command or simply @nation.

Additionally, you can set up private Discord text and voice channels to communicate with only members of your Nation:

  • Link your account using /discordbridge account link
  • In the Discord #bot-commands channel, use the command /nation channel create [nation] to create the private voice and text channels.
  • The channels are only visible to members of your Nation.

Nation Economy

Joining a Nation fundamentally changes how Land upkeep works.

Independent Settlements

A standalone Land pays its normal upkeep directly to the server.

Nation Settlements

A Land belonging to a Nation no longer pays its normal Land upkeep directly to the server.

Instead, the Nation can charge its member Lands a per-chunk Nation tax.

The Nation then pays its own upkeep to the server.

This creates a real Nation economy: member settlements contribute towards maintaining the larger organisation.

Nation Taxes

Nation leaders can set a tax on their member Lands of up to:

£40 per claimed chunk per collection

If a Land cannot pay its Nation tax, it can be removed from the Nation.

Settlement owners should therefore pay attention to both their Land finances and the tax policy of any Nation they join.

Nation Upkeep

The Nation itself pays:

£8 per chunk

based on the territory controlled by its member Lands.

New Nations receive a 7-day grace period before Nation upkeep begins.

Higher Nation levels reduce Nation upkeep.

If a Nation cannot afford its upkeep, the Nation itself will be deleted after a 7-day grace period.

Nation Progression

Nations have five levels.

Progress depends on four measures of collective success:

  • number of Lands
  • unique players
  • total claimed territory
  • combined wealth held in member Land banks

/nations level

Levels Can Be Lost

Nation progression isn’t permanent.

If a Nation stops meeting its current requirements, it can be downgraded.

That means a successful Nation needs to maintain its population, territory, member Lands and wealth, not merely reach a level once.

Claim Bonuses

Nation progression directly benefits every member settlement.

Higher Nation levels grant additional claim capacity to each Land in the Nation.

At the highest level, every member Land receives 100 additional potential claims from Nation progression alone.

Diplomacy

Nations can establish relationships with other Nations.

They can form alliances, remain neutral or become enemies.

Manage relationships through:

/nations relations

Diplomacy becomes particularly important because wars on Thumpstone take place between Nations rather than individual settlements.

Nations & War

Individual settlements cannot independently declare war.

War is a Nation-level activity.

When Nations go to war, their member Lands and players become part of the conflict.

Wars can have serious consequences, including:

  • PvP
  • financial losses
  • surrender tribute
  • captured territory

Joining a Nation therefore gives your settlement greater opportunities, but also means sharing some of that Nation’s risks.

Read the Wars Guide before becoming involved in a conflict.

Leaving a Nation

A settlement can leave its Nation with:

/nations leave

Nation leaders can also remove member Lands.

Remember that leaving can affect both the Nation and your settlement:

  • the Nation may lose progression requirements
  • your Land loses Nation claim bonuses
  • your Land returns to the normal standalone upkeep system
